Lessons

Both our teachers, Una Lauw and Mrs Lauw-Teo Peck Twee, offer lessons for students in Suzuki Violin, from beginners to advanced levels. Students can take selective graded exams when they are ready. Ms Una Lauw will also take in students for diploma exams.

Suzuki Programmes

Suzuki Violin

Suzuki Violin is offered by both Una Lauw and Mrs Lauw-Teo Peck Twee for beginners aged 2 and half and above. As the Suzuki Method relies heavily on a triangle of relationship between the teacher, parent, and the student, all parents are required to attend lessons with the student, to walk and guide their child through daily practice throughout the week at home.

The course begins with students going through the Pre-Twinkle stage, then moving on to the Suzuki Violin Book 1, in which the repertoire is designed to impart different skills (e.g. motor skills), techniques and foundations of the violin. Suzuki Violin focuses on teaching the child to produce a beautiful tone, while enjoying the process of learning.

Una and Mrs Lauw also incorporate a monthly group lesson at the last week of every month, to encourage students to observe and learn from other students, make friends, as well as to build their confidence in performing with an audience.

Suzuki Piano(only by special request)

Suzuki Piano is offered by Una Lauw for beginners aged 4 and over. As the Suzuki Method relies heavily on a triangle of relationship between the teacher, parent, and the student, all parents are required to attend lessons with the student, to walk and guide their child through practice throughout the week at home.

The Suzuki Method is centered around the belief that every child can learn, appreciate and enjoy music with the intrinsic talent they possess, especially when surrounded with the right environment at a young age. This environment centers around having the parent being deeply involved with their child's learning, as they are key to their child's early growth and development not only in their musical journey, but also in life.

The Suzuki Method revolves around the concept of what Dr. Suzuki coined "The Mother-Tongue Approach" which presents the ideas that children are able to learn music the same way they learn their native language: by being surrounded with the language (in this case, music), encouraged with parents' love and guidance, and family environment. Throughout the child's younger years, the following few factors play a heavy hand:

Parental Involvement: Parents play the biggest part of any child's early life as they learn and grow as persons. With music, it is the same as teaching a child language.
Listening: Constantly listening to the music is very important, as it mimics being exposed to their mother tongue by speaking with parents. Listening to the repertoire in the Suzuki books also provide the student with a good example of a beautiful tone.
Repetition: Repetition involves constantly practicing and reviewing the pieces, even though we already know them. Through reviewing, we are able to build and develop new skills, while ensuring that the old skills are further strengthened.
Encouragement/Motivation: Encouragement is what every child seeks, to have their efforts recognised. When parents are supportive and offers sincere praise and affection, the child absorbs the compliments and will be able to achieve a higher standard of performance.
